Practicing What We Preach

Is it just me, or do we sometimes forget to do what we know we should do?  I believe most of us have had a set of experiences that have taught us to do or not do certain things.  We have learned our lessons, and even shared them with others.  That’s why it’s so peculiar.  I know the things I need to work on.  I can even advise others on best practices in life.  So, why do I do things that I know I shouldn’t do?  Why don’t we always practice what we preach?  As many might answer, “Nobody’s perfect.”  And some might say it’s because we haven’t yet arrived.  We are not yet where we are destined to be.  It’s just odd to me.  How and why do we continue behaviors that we know aren’t getting us anywhere?

Lord, help us to walk in discernment, with You as our guide.  Help us to lead productive lives, and to always take a moment’s pause before acting or reacting.  Thank you, Amen.

  1. Yes, what is it when we dont do what we know to do? and why dont we do it?

So many of us do use the worn out dead beat excuse of not arriving yet and God aint finished with me yet. The funny thing is, is that once we know about how to act and what to do there are no yet's, just lame excuses to continue to straddle the fence for another day and use the name of God for our clutch.

This reminds me of so called Christian folks Speaking Life about Forgiveness and not practicing the skills of saying Sorry to persons they Strike against. Guess what, God say's to ask for forgiveness from those we have offended, as well as from him.

Lets face it, some so-called Christian folks apply God where and when they want to, mainly when its Show Time, ya know, when there's an audience.

  2. Interesting (and loaded) response. I am torn between responding and not doing so. Your post seems a bit accusatory, and that's puts me a bit on defense, quite honestly, but here's what I can add: Do you feel that you are exempt from the condition that I spoke of in my post? Has there never been a time in your life when you did or didn't do something even when you knew better?

I was not trying to draw offense. I was just trying to note a human condition which I thought was universal, regardless of Faith. God forgives and asks us to forgive and ask forgiveness. That exchange does not always look the same, and while many are at fault of leading blatantly double existences (off and on Christians), there might quite possibly be others who are trying their best and know they have a ways to go.

I do not pretend to have any answers though. Maybe you're right. Who am I? Just a woman typing what she thinks and feels. Your opinions, feelings, and observations are just as valuable.

  3. You, are correct in your writing Lyphe. You should also remember that you have started a Blog on the WWW, so you are going to get responses from every and all.
Also, note that many others are just sharing with you, so don't take anything personal.

  4. How and why do we continue behaviors that we know aren’t getting us anywhere?

Good question. Very good question. Lord knows that I wish there was a universal answer to the question because it would definitely help me to understand why I continue to act against my better judgment.

  5. @Johnny G., thanks for the needed reality check. I was thinking that while I was writing my response. I shouldn't take things too personal. People are just sharing their thoughts, like me. I do think I took offense, and I will also admit to trying to 'explain myself' too much, in defense of my own thoughts. Thanks again for the reminder.

@Don, Thanks for your comment, and I hope you will visit again. In response to your comment, it sure would be nice to figure out human behavior, huh? We live and learn, though, right?
